More shells and Embroidery - Tales from Bhujodi

Tuesday, 4 July 2017 / , , , ,

There were more shells and patchwork panels on display as there are stars in the sky . After having leisurely strolls and being so enthusiastic about a town which I googled before leaving for my travel to Kutch and Bhuj, I was looking forward to be blown away.  Not only did I confirm my seat on the plane, I mentally rather booked my fashion seat at a village which is known for handicrafts .
Bhujodi is the major textile center of Kutch with more than 1200 inhabitants involved in textile handicraft production.
Our trip was planned in a way that our first stop was Kutch , and Bhujodi was on the itinerary merely as a pit stop on our way to Mandvi Beach . I had a chance of meeting local artisans during my stay at Rann of Kutch and small weavers and local designers who travelled all the way from the village of textiles( Bhujodi) had set up their small shops at the desert camp. I wanted to get each and every piece I saw there, but held onto my horses as much as my hubby held onto his wallet.
It was a very hot day in Bhujodi town. The sun was too strong but the gush of excitement for a shopping spree I was about to experience didn't let me feel a thing.
There I was in for a surprise. I met weavers, tie- dye experts, jewellery designers ,small time artists , block printers and who not . Most of them welcomed me to their homes and even let me watch them as they worked around.
I saw a lady sewing these shells to this blouse in one of the houses. I randomly walked in . Intrigued by the colour I started walking towards her to inspect closely on this piece of clothing she was working on. "Abhi Poora Nahin Hua hai " - Its half finished  she said.
A close inspection and my heart was set on this blouse and I told her that I had one hour in the village and I really wanted this piece . Her eyes beamed with flurry of excitement and we set a price for this beauty .
The sleeves needed to be stitched , the shells were half strung and her elder daughter announced a lunch break as she carelessly slipped the plate in front of her . We started chatting and with a quick nod , the daughter was instructed to take the food away and bring it later.
I explained her about my role as an influencer . I told her that I use fashion as a means to express ideas , and how my style of dressing imbued meaning and I use clothes and dressing up as a tool and commitment to the idea of supporting Indian weaving industry. But if they are not used where everyone can see them, can they really have an impact ? Throwing this question at her, I left the conversation there and left the rest to her imagination. She got a fair idea when I showed her my instagram page .
I told her that I loved being there and how seeing the whole family work into making some unique garments I concluded that there are more to clothes than just clothes. After looking at the way every weaver functions in a small village like Bhujodi, I framed clothing as a collection of values, diversity, creativity and entrepreneurship .
It was then I realised living in a city like Delhi where fashion is fast and consuming, I reflected my distance with the industry. Tipping them with the amount which was double the price she asked for was the least I could do.
This whole experience taught me one thing  -there is so much beauty and local talent available in our country too, and sometimes that whole feeling of gratification comes when you have a close encounter with the maker of something you instantly have a connection with.
I drafted this post because a lot of you were keen to find out the details of this outfit. I wanted to share the sentiment behind this look and this is my only medium, so here you guys , a few pictures of the same.
If you have had a similar experience, you know what I am talking about ;)

Just In Time for Summer

Oriental fashion and the kimono, amazon india fashion week

While our city has been swallowed by financial troubles, and demonization has become a legit excuse for not indulging in fashion at the moment, the Indian fashion movement has a very low key vibe unless things take off fully after another season of Amazon India fashion week scheduled to happen in March.

Today I am going to emphasize a little more on the traditional rather than the modern , and after the mainstream use and strangulation of the word FUSION, I think we should open a poll on what should we call this form of dressing  ? From subtle fusion , to horrendous fusion, my few grey hair have seen it all . And since we are doing this poll, maybe think about a new term for " FASHION BLOGGER " too ?
Blogging industry needs so many new names . Five years before, it was a different charm to explain to someone what you do , exchanging cards, telling them how blogging is the new age of fashion.
Now even my neighborhood DHOBI knows about fashion bloggers . " Kal hee madam aayi thee photographer ke saath !! Boli main fashion blogger hoon , aapke yahan photo lena hai "
Clearly the Fashion blogger wind has reached places , and the bloggers have left the stable and are running wild down the road influencing as per their own capabilities/incapabilities

Why are Medical or legal/financial services blogs not mushrooming like the fashion or lifestyle blog? The answer is a no brainer, coz neither you require a professional degree nor a formal education of the subject, nor ownership of a requisite number of dresses/accessories/footwear.And the best is that you need not even have the vague sense of fashion styling or even dressing up. It adds to your snob value if you do not possess writing skills. It really takes talent to misspell words and rephrase( make a hash ) idioms as per ones personal sensibility or translation skills (from Hindi to English ).Well, no one has got a Literature award for writing correct English on a Blog but who knows one day such fractured english may win you an Ingenious Award for Fusion English. If Singaporeans are proud of their Chinglish, why can't we be for our Hinglish...?? After all we are the koll centre ( call centre )of the world. Don't believe me !!! Sample this-  "The whether these days is "magicfull" so I opened the window and let the atmosphere come in "

Since the Fashion and Lifestyle Industry has decided to slowly phase out the following Influencers who have a decent sense of fashion, knowledge of styling, updated on the latest or upcoming trends, interacting with designers, engaging writing skills, fresh talent would be inducted in the next financial year.
So come one come all. Criteria for joining the Fashion Influencer community is us under .You can be an eligible blogger if you are:
1.Shuffling between jobs (part time or just for fun )
2.Out of a job and taking a sabbatical (read unable to fool the next employer )
3.Modelling ( you will automatically be pushed four ranks up ) and utilizing the time between assignments
4.Run out of money, boyfriend has thrown you out .Want to get even with the evil world.
5.Page 3 aspirants (preference would be given to candidates who could murder to get a selfie with Sonam Kapoor or any of their favourite movie stars )
6. Fashion week bloggers - Bloggers who attend to get their own Paparazzi moment in front of a street style photographer and has no interest what happens on the ramp. Talk to them about any show, and swear you would regret bringing the topic up . Forget about the show- There is so much confusion in what season they are attending .

Wow ! Everything in this fashion world is worth inspiration . Honesty does not flow very easily. Its effect is yet to come and you may hate me as of now. But I truly hope that I am able to wash down everything here.
Okay Surbhi - STOP Enough........ Breathe In ...... Breathe out ......
Now since my rant is over, enjoy the outfit I wore for AIFWSS17 which took place in the month of October - Treat this as your season hint and grab that Cuppa coffee now.

Street Style AIFWSS17 With Fossil Q Marshal and Gucci Dionysus Bag

Fossil Q Founder Touchscreen Stainless Steel Smartwatch - Fossil

Some people are born a watch person while some develop an appreciation for it over a few years. Just like Wine !! You may or may not like it the first time, but gradually deep down inside it's becoming a syndrome.  We have all seen those timepieces , some fancy, some vintage and some eclectic..
Your trip through a watch is probably my trip through a watch and we all do the same things with it.
But things changed a bit when I got my hands on the Fossil Q Marshal.
I attended the official launch of it on 5th October where I saw Fossil group launching a range of connected devices across 6 of its owned and licensed brands.
Today we are talking about my new acquired Fossil Q watch , and how its definitely telling me more than time .
Look and Feel : With a soft curving multi finish case, and interchangeable genuine leather straps, the watch is nothing less than a normcore from style perspective .
With a great density of design , it surely fits the bill of a watch collecting nerd and doesn't sit too heavy either on the wrists. The Q Marshal features a rugged case, along with a striking navy blue plated case, paired with vintage inspired leather case. A nice sporty watch like look perfect for summers 😼

Anytime Anywhere information : With Q Marshal , even if I want to get lost , I couldn't possibly, because it provides me with a uncomplicated way to navigate once I have connected it to my phone and it takes only seconds to do that .The touch screen feature, makes sure that all my alerts are right at the tip of my finger, ready to be scrolled up and down. From whats app, to voice calls alerts to processing any virtual information on the go , this marshal makes sure that I don't miss any real time update.

The Screen with many Faces : Okay so this feature has to be my favourite one. The watch comes equipped with not only cool and funky screens options, but has a face for your mood of the day. Besides the custom face , a few more can be downloaded right from the Android Wear app. Since I wore the watch for all the five days of AIFWSS17 last month, I was more than happy to customise a face of the day coordinating with my look of the day. This changing the face part, definitely raised the bar of intuitiveness for the fashion week street style snappers coz a) Its elegant functionality and bright ( Mr. Bean ) display popped some eyeballs and b) It kinda blended with my all denim patches sober with a hint of fun look for the day and the outfit I wore on Day 3 .
Of all the other mandatory fashion week things /list, I don't know if anyone ever included being handsfree as a pointer in the list  ? Doubt it ? Well me too . This watch let me perform all sorts of tasks, without even reaching for my iphone. A clear winner when you need your hands free !!

Track my Steps : Often I am able to charm my friends ,when I just raise my wrist and track my daily  morning jog with them. In this age of touch screens , we all want that uncomplicated device to track all my activity while I am plugged to the music , and when my feet are in motion.

Price and Final Verdict : Fossil Q Marshal is priced at INR 22,000 in India . The Marshal is fun, with the only flip side of getting familiarize with it in the beginning. It helps me streamline my minute to minute notifications, coz I am a very social person incase you don't follow how active I am everywhere .
Its affordable watch for those who want to read texts every minute . The battery life is pretty decent- upto 8-10 hrs again depends on the usage, and is well sized for small wrists. The straps are interchangeable , and from fancy to being sophisticated , you can decide what's your mood of the day and  how do you want to dress up ! Now the only question remains is :
Is it essential ? No ..... Do I need it - Yes - Because I like being able to read my mails , check my message notifications, social alerts voice command it ,rather than having my smartphone in hand all the time.

I wore this outfit for Day 3 of AIFWSS17 . Deep in my quirky antiquity , this pair of denim, freshly picked from a random but funky store at People's Square, Shanghai took all my money . It was back there behind those fancier designer label things . My husband saw it first , and showed it to me . The first thought that struck me was - Can I wear it to my grave ? Okay that was an overwhelming response, for starters lets wear it to a more appreciative place ,where together with my Gucci Dionysus bag, I can Glamorously traumatize a few people .
I was lucky to get the Bee edition on my Gucci Dionysus, socially suited to my Instagram handle and most importantly meaning sense to my name  !!
So what do you say ? Do I get your approval of strict good taste in fashion yet ?
